Caliph of Baghdad (Overture) - Boieldieu
The 'opera comique' "The Caliph of Baghdad" was premiered in Paris in 1800, and was celebrated throughout Europe, possibly because of its exotic subject matter. The current performance was part of a concert to celebrate the popularity of such works with orchestras and groups of diverse instruments, often based on guitars and mandolins, which were popular in Queensland in the last two decades of the 19th century and into the early 20th century.

This video was taken exactly three years ago at the Dartington Summer School in 2008, which I was fortunate to attend when Alison Stephens was tutoring in mandolin techniques. I would like to share it in memory of a wonderfully generous person and musician whose energy levels and dedication to her music were amazing.

Love the way she plays. I have been searching high and low for something to supplant my love for Takashi Ochi mandolin recordings, this could be it. Could be the room acoustic but I found the mandolin sounds very nice indeed with a very rounded resonance.
My favourite piece by Bach, played fantastically and with such a unique sound, what a great way to start the day, thank you

I have the same make of mandolin, serial #39. I love playing my Lyon & Healy. It is such a beautiful sounding instrument. I only wish I could play it as well as Marissa.

ummm..... is she doing a *slide* on the bottom string? Whatever, her pacing and control of volume is just plain magical. I reckon Herr Bach smiled when this rendition wafted in through his window in the Castle of Heaven.
Being a mandolinmaker myself , I would have loved to make an instrument for this lady. Although Hummel would have composed for a bowl instrument, she makes up with her own bowls ! Great !
